Great places for coffee and quick, light lunches all over Israel
When you are touring you don’t want to waste good-touring-time on long-lunches. Also, most North Americans eat big dinners and prefer something light for lunch.
True – you can have felaffel, hummus and shwarma ( see my earlier blog from January 14) but sometimes you just want a good old-fashioned sandwich or salad.
There are many cafes and food courts where all this is available but these are my recommendations:
- Aroma Espresso Bar – a chain, based on self service (fast!!) mainly in the cities and all over Israel, but here and there “on the road”. Their coffee is excellent and their menu includes pastries, big salads and sandwiches. Low prices.
- Si Espresso or Sagafredo Bar – two names for the same places – mainly at the Dor-Alon (green sign) gas stations all over Israel. Table service is usual. Their coffee brand – Italian Sagafredo – is my favorite. They serve breakfasts, sandwiches, toasts, big salads, kishes, ice-cream and pastries. Prices are more than fair. Don’t be deterred by them being at a gas station – in Israel some of the better restaurants are at gas stations – it’s a tax thing.
- Greg’s and Arcafe – two good chains but with very few localities and only in the big cities, mainly in the malls. Prices slightly higher than the previous two.
All have something for your children.
A small tip – the salads are usually enormous and most of the sandwiches come with a personal salad. I always share with my lunch partner (and I am a big eater).
